Douglas Flora: A Cure for Cancer – Closer Than We Think?
Douglas Flora, Executive Medical Director of Oncology Services at St. Elizabeth Healthcare, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A Cure for Cancer: Closer Than We Think?
Throughout history, diseases that once seemed invincible have been conquered. The advent of antibiotics turned bacterial infections from fatal to manageable. Polio, which paralyzed generations, was vanquished by a vaccine. These breakthroughs reshaped human survival. But cancer remains. Not because we haven’t made progress but because cancer is not one disease—it is a collection of over 200 distinct diseases, each evolving with terrifying adaptability.
To ask if we can “cure” cancer is to ask an incomplete question. The real question is: how close are we to transforming cancer into a chronic, manageable, or even preventable condition? With advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), precision medicine, early detection, and targeted therapies, we are standing on the precipice of a new era. The future is no longer just an extrapolation of past trends; it is being shaped by breakthroughs occurring right now.
Read my piece to hear my (evidence-based) answer to the question posed above–hint: we are making relentless progress…
