Mike Herman: Educate Towards a Cancer-Free Tomorrow is more than just a slogan – it’s a movement

Mike Herman, Founder at Speaking on Cancer Patient Advocacy  shared a post on LinkedIn:

“The Surgeon General just confirmed what too many still don’t realize: Alcohol is a proven cancer risk.

For years, we’ve known that smoking causes cancer. We’ve known that certain chemicals, poor diets, and lack of exercise increase our risk. But alcohol? Many still don’t connect the dots.

The latest report from the U.S. Surgeon General makes it clear: Alcohol consumption raises the risk of several cancers, including those of the breast, liver, colon, and esophagus. Yet, awareness remains dangerously low.

Read the full report here.

This is exactly why Educate Towards a Cancer-Free Tomorrow is more than just a slogan – it’s a movement. We’re fighting to bring cancer prevention education into every high school in America and beyond because knowledge is the most powerful tool we have.

Here’s the reality:

A single drink per day increases breast cancer risk.
Heavy alcohol use doubles or triples the risk of head, neck, and liver cancers.
The vast majority of people don’t know this connection even exists.

So, my question is: WHY AREN’T WE TALKING ABOUT THIS MORE?

I’ve survived an “incurable” cancer for 11 years – beating the odds with science, resilience, and advocacy. But survival isn’t enough. We must prevent cancer before it starts.

This is a call to action. If you’re an educator, policymaker, healthcare leader, or just someone who cares – let’s connect. Let’s make sure the next generation has the knowledge to make informed choices. Let’s stop cancer before it starts.

What do you think? How do we push this conversation forward? Let’s talk in the comments.”
