Siobhan Freeney: Simple but excellent visual to explain why Breast Density Matters
Siobhan Freeney, Founder of Lobular Ireland and Patient Advocate Founder of Being Dense, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Here’s a really simple but excellent visual to explain why Breast Density Matters.
See how the Cancer can be easily seen on the left in the ‘Non Dense’ Breast and then look at how the same Cancer becomes incredibly difficult, almost impossible to see on the right, in the ‘Dense Breast’
This clearly demonstrates how Mammograms can miss Cancers in Dense Breasts – in fact up to 50% are missed because looking for Cancer in Dense Breasts is like looking for a Snow Ball in a Snow Storm.
Ladies, Breast Density is assessed when the Radiologist reads your Mammogram, it is not classified information
No woman should have to wait until after a Breast Cancer Diagnosis to find out that she has Dense Breasts and that her Breast Cancer was missed, but this has been and continues to be an unthinkable outcome for some Women
Unfortunately for Irishwomen and across Europe our Breast Density Information is not shared with us along with our Mammogram results
We have 6,000 names on a Petition Tell Me My Breast Density seeking Standardised Breast Density Reporting for all Women who have Mammograms
We invite you all to help us by adding your name here.”
