Marianne Sarcich: Catch up, Hollywood
Marianne Sarcich, Breast Health National Advocate, shared on LinkedIn:
“I’m sure you know that Hollywood has a diversity issue. But did you know how bad it is when it comes to portraying doctors? Just over 90% of the time, when the lead character is a doctor, it will be cast with a white male. And that is so out of step with reality. “Patients shouldn’t have an outdated, stereotypical idea of how an oncologist should look, based on media depictions, when they seek care.”
Why is it important? “Movies and TV have a profound impact on pop culture, shaping society and influencing trends,” says a Heart of Hollywood article. This belief is echoed by many others, including Forbes. So, catch up, Hollywood. Use authentic casting to bring all roles, especially medical ones, into the 21st century.”
