Angela Christine Weyand: Today the 1st Gene Therapy for sickle cell was approved in the UK based on his work
Angela Christine Weyand, Associate Professor at University of Michigan Medical School, shared the a post by Vijay Sankaran, Lodish Family Chair in the Division of Hematology/Oncology, Boston Children’s Hospital, on Twitter adding the following:
“I interviewed Boston Children’s Hospital for fellowship a decade ago.
The director told me that the work that their future fellow Vijay Sankaran did as a student would someday cure Sickle Cell disease.
Today the 1st Gene Therapy for sickle cell was approved in the UK based on his work.”
Quoting Vijay Sankaran:
“Remarkable to see that our discoveries over 15 years ago would enable such tremendous advances for sickle cell disease and thalassemia!!! Incredible to think that the final sentence of our 2008 paper would be prophetic”
