Overcoming recurrence: How research is bringing new hope for breast cancer patients – The Institute of Cancer Research

The Institute of Cancer Research shared on LinkedIn:

“One in five women with breast cancer will see the disease return years or even decades after successful treatment.

Living with this risk places a significant psychological burden on many survivors. Our researchers are making huge strides towards decreasing recurrence rates, exploring different treatment avenues.

One team has developed a computational tool that could help scientists boost each patient’s immune response to breast cancer that has spread, maximising treatment effectiveness.

Another has found a way to eliminate the ‘dormant’ breast cancer cells that can persist in the body following treatment and cause the disease to return at a later date.

Future treatments that use this approach could remove the worry of recurrence. In complementary work, our researchers have also developed a technique that makes it possible to predict breast cancer recurrence months or even years ahead of it occurring, giving clinicians a large window to intervene.

Read our latest blog post to find out more about our ground-breaking work in this area.”
