2024 ASCO Election Results
ASCO released the outcome of its 2024 elections for the President of the 2026-2027 term, Board of Directors and Nominating Committee Members.
ASCO has elected Elizabeth A. Mittendorf, MD, PhD, MHCM, FASCO, to serve as its president starting in June 2026.
Elizabeth A. Mittendorf is a leading surgeon and researcher in breast cancer and surgical oncology. She served as an Attending Surgeon at Malcolm Grow Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center before joining MD Anderson Cancer Center, where she held roles such as Deputy Chair of the Research Division and Co-Leader of the Breast Cancer Moon Shot. In 2018, she became Director of Research for Breast Surgical Oncology at Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center. Dr. Mittendorf is also involved in advisory roles at major cancer institutions and holds leadership positions with ASCO and other professional organizations.

Dr. Melissa Dillmon is a medical oncologist and chair of the oncology department at Harbin Clinic LLC, now part of Advocate Health. She currently chairs the Clinical Practice and Innovation Committee and has previously chaired the Government Relations Committee and the State Affiliate Council. Dr. Dillmon is also a past member of the Association for Clinical Oncology Board of Directors and serves on the Political Action Committee Advisory Council. Additionally, she sits on the Executive Board of the Georgia Society of Clinical Oncology, where she chairs the Legislative Committee. She is also a graduate of the Leadership Development Program.
Dr. Sonali Smith is the Elwood V. Jensen Professor and chief of the Hematology/Oncology Section at the University of Chicago. She has previously chaired the Cancer Communications and Professional Development Committees, served as the Scientific Program Chair for the 2022 ASCO Annual Meeting, and been a member of the Diversity and Inclusivity Task Force and the Conquer Cancer Grants Selection Committee. Dr. Smith is also a past recipient of the ASCO Excellence in Teaching Award.
Nathan A. Pennell, MD, PhD, FASCO
Dr. Nathan Pennell is a professor and thoracic medical oncologist, as well as vice chair of clinical research and director of the Lung Cancer Medical Oncology Program at Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Center. He serves on the Joint Special Awards Selection Committee and has previously chaired the Road to Recovery Task Force on Cancer Research. Dr. Pennell has also been a member of the Nominating Committee, Cancer Communications Committee, Annual Meeting Education Program Committee, and Annual Meeting Scientific Program Committee. A graduate of the Leadership Development Program, he is currently the editor-in-chief of the ASCO Educational Book.

Dr. Suzanne Cole is the medical director of community oncology, rural, and underrepresented minority (CORUM) research at UT Southwestern Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center. She has held various leadership roles within ASCO, including serving on the Cancer Communications Committee, Diversity and Inclusivity Task Force, Practice Guidelines Implementation Network, State Affiliate Council, Annual Meeting Education Program, and the Meeting and Member Publications Editorial Board. Dr. Cole is also a graduate of the Leadership Development Program.
Dr. Erika Hamilton is a medical oncologist and the director of the Breast Cancer Research Program at Sarah Cannon Research Institute. She chairs the Annual Meeting Scientific Program Committee and serves on ASCO’s Research Committee. A former journal peer reviewer and a graduate of ASCO’s Leadership Development Program, Dr. Hamilton has also previously led the Breast Cancer Track for ASCO’s Scientific Program Committee.
Dr. Rana McKay is a medical oncologist and a professor of medicine and urology at the University of California, San Diego. She serves on the Conquer Cancer Grants Selection Committee and currently leads the Genitourinary Cancer – Kidney and Bladder Track for the Annual Meeting Education Program Committee. Previously, she also served as the track leader for the Annual Meeting Scientific Program Committee’s Genitourinary Cancer – Kidney and Bladder Track. Dr. McKay has been a member of the Journal of Clinical Oncology Editorial Board and is a graduate of the Leadership Development Program.
