Toral Shah: 5 more scholarships for anyone who has had a primary diagnosis for breast cancer
Toral Shah, Founder of The Urban Kitchen, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“This Giving Tuesday, I am giving 5 more scholarships to BIPOC women and non-binary folk for my integrative oncology course for anyone who has had a primary diagnosis for breast cancer.
Cancer rates are rising, and breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Black and South Asian women often find out they have breast cancer later than others, leading to a lower chance of survival. Minority women may struggle with getting screened for breast cancer due to trust issues and lack of education.
They are also more likely to have aggressive types of cancer that are difficult to treat. Factors such as low income and limited healthcare access contribute to these disparities, along with language barriers and a lack of diversity among healthcare professionals.
It is important to directly reach out to Black and South Asian communities to encourage early screenings, self-exams, and genetic testing while addressing cultural taboos and providing culturally appropropriate advice.
We know that there has been research on diet, exercise, and other lifestyle factors that can reduce the risk of cancer. But often this is not culturally aware nor inclusive for Black and South Asian women.
My integrative oncology breast cancer course is culturally competent and teaches you the science and background to diet and lifestyle choices to help you to create your own plan to reduce your risk of breast cancer recurrence.
If you have had a primary breast cancer diagnosis, and are from a Black or South Asian background, and would like to learn about what you can do to reduce your risk of recurrence, please do apply for these scholarships. Please do share with anyone who may be eligible.”
