“Voice of the families Post No 22: Arinda Fortunate.
Arinda Fortunate is a 15-year-old girl, whose family stays a few kilometers away from Mbarara City in Western Uganda. Arinda was presented with two weeks of abdominal pain and distension. She had also developed a jaw mass, which resulted in disfigurement of her face and difficulty in chewing food.
She had been taken to clinics near her home, but despite the treatment she received, her symptoms kept progressing rapidly. Her parents then decided to bring her to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital (MRRH). A biopsy was taken off her jaw mass and the results showed that she had cancer – Burkitt lymphoma. She was then started on chemotherapy.
She was enrolled in the ‘Zero Abandonment from Start to Finish’ programme, which has provided her and her family with money to meet their out-of-pocket costs during treatment. The father and mother make their income from bricklaying and tailoring, respectively, which is not much.
Therefore, this financial assistance came in handy and Arinda completed her treatment last month and started her survivorship journey.
The clinic team is so excited about her good progress while the parents are eternally grateful for the medical care and financial support that enabled them to support their daughter through treatment.
