Aaron Goodman: What is an “M protein”

Aaron Goodman, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of California, posted on X:

“What the hell is an ‘M protein‘?

Monoclonal immunoglobulin secreted by an abnormally expanded clone of plasma cells in an amount that is above the polyclonal immunoglobulin background.

M protein = Many words for same thing
•Paraprotein
•Monoclonal protein (M-protein)
•M-component
•M-spike M protein may contain
•Heavy + light chains (intact immunoglobulin)
•Light chains only (light chain myeloma, light chain deposition disease, AL amyloidosis)
•Heavy chains only (heavy chain deposition disease).”
