In this video, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlights the urgent need to address cancer, noting that nearly 200,000 families will lose loved ones to the disease by the end of the week, many of which are preventable. The World Health Organization (WHO) collaborates with over 300 partners globally to prevent, detect, and treat cancer.

Since 2018, WHO has launched initiatives to combat cervical, childhood, and breast cancers, reaching over 100 countries and securing significant investments. The organization also supports cancer patients in conflict zones and has made progress in cervical cancer elimination and childhood cancer care.

Dr. Ghebreyesus calls for increased advocacy ahead of the first United Nations high-level meeting on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the coming year, emphasizing the importance of research, prevention, and treatment to save lives.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), a position he has held since 2017. In this role, he has led global health initiatives and responses to public health emergencies, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

Previously, Dr. Tedros served as Ethiopia’s Minister of Health, where he significantly improved healthcare infrastructure and expanded access to health services. He also served as Ethiopia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, strengthening international diplomatic relations and advocating for health as a key component of global development.
