Bishal Gyawali: Improving patient outcomes is all that matters

Bishal GyawaliAssociate Professor at Queen’s University, shared a tweet by Amol Akhade, Consultant Medical Oncologist at Suyog Cancer Clinics and Reliance Hospitals, adding the following on X:

“For a lethal disease like es-SCLC, claiming benefit based on 0.5 month of PFS while OS remains negative….. seriously, where are we going to draw the line?
This is not an isolated example. Recently, I see people congratulating themselves and claiming ‘great win for our patients’ based on embarrassingly dubious marginal results. As long as we continue to celebrate such results, we won’t improve patient outcomes meaningfully despite dozens of celebrations. At the end, improving patient outcomes is all that matters.”

Quoting Amol Akhade’s tweet:

“Can some one tell me why the conclusion of this article published in JTO & JTO CRR dose not mention that OS for this trial is not statistically significant. I can understand that medical writers who wrote the article wanted to hide it for some reasons . But why did editor and reviewers did not ask authors to add that one line in conclusion. Why can’t we have some more honesty in trial publication, at least at editor level?”
