Airazat M. Kazaryan joins OncoDaily Editorial Board

Airazat M. Kazaryan, an academic surgeon specializing in general and gastrointestinal surgery recently joined the OncoDaily Editorial Board.

He was born in Yerevan, Armenia, in 1977. In 2007, Dr. Kazaryan moved to Oslo, Norway, and joined the group of Prof. Bjørn Edwin at the Intervention Centre, Oslo University Hospital.

Airazat M. Kazaryan has extensive clinical and research experience in surgery. He completed a research fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery at the Interventional Centre, Oslo University Hospital, from February 2007 to January 2011.

During this time, he developed skills in minimally invasive techniques that would shape his future contributions to the field.

Following this, he served as a staff surgeon and research fellow in the Department of Faculty Surgery N2 at the I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy, affiliated with Moscow City Clinical Hospital N61, from July 2004 to January 2007.

Earlier, he worked as a staff surgeon and senior laboratory assistant in the same department for a brief period in early 2004.

Dr. Kazaryan began his clinical training with a clinical residency and postgraduate research fellowship in surgery at the I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy and the Endocrinologic Research Centre, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, from October 2001 to January 2004.

Additionally, he completed his residency in the Surgical Department at Venstre Viken – Drammen Hospital and at Hole Medical Centre in Norway, both from February to August 2011.

This initiated a long-term fruitful collaboration. Over the last two decades, the Oslo group has significantly contributed to the development of advanced laparoscopic surgery at an international level.

Dr. Kazaryan has been an active member of this group, focusing mainly on research in the field of liver, pancreas, and adrenal surgery, as well as the standardization of perioperative morbidity assessment.

His research has been highly cited, particularly regarding the oncologic integrity of laparoscopic liver resection for colorectal liver metastases.

Dr. Kazaryan is also a dedicated advocate for knowledge dissemination and the popularization of research.

He serves on the editorial boards of several professional journals in surgery and acts as a reviewer for leading academic journals in the field.

Currently, he is a consultant surgeon at the Fonna Hospital Trust (Stord, Norway) and an honorary researcher at the Intervention Centre, Oslo University Hospital.

Additionally, he is an invited Professor of Surgery at the I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University and M. Heratsi Yerevan State Medical University.

Dr. Kazaryan has authored over 60 full research articles and more than 200 abstracts.

Education

Dr. Kazaryan graduated from the I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy in 2001, where he began his academic and clinical surgical career under the supervision of Professor Alexander Shulutko.

He completed his PhD thesis entitled “New Minimally Invasive Techniques in the Treatment of Patients with Lesions in the Liver: Laparoscopy and Extracorporeal High Intensity Focused Ultrasound” under the supervision of Prof. Bjørn Edwin, Prof. Erik Fosse, and Dr. Per Kristian Hol in 2013.

Awards

• Dr. Kazaryan was awarded His Majesty Norwegian King’s Gold Medal in Medicine for his prominent research contributions in the field of minimally invasive surgery.
• Nomination for Award of EAES in a rubric “Best scientific presentation” at the 18th International.
• Congress of European Association for Endoscopic Surgery, selected as one of six best presentations –June, 2010
• Award of EAES in a rubric “Best poster presentation” at the 16th International Congress of European Association for Endoscopic Surgery – June, 2008.
