Highlights from SIOP 2024 Congress Day 2: 21 Posts Not to Miss
The 56th Congress of the ‘Societe Internationale d’Oncologie Pediatrique’ (SIOP) is being held from October 17-20, 2024 in Honolulu, Hawaii, US.
The SIOP 2024 annual congress in Hawaii represents an exciting milestone for the organization. Hosting the event in the United States offers an excellent opportunity to receive valuable contributions from North American colleagues and institutions, including the Children’s Oncology Group. Additionally, the congress’s proximity to South-East Asia and Oceania is expected to enrich the event with the expertise and perspectives from these dynamic regions. Attendees will also have the chance to experience the unique charm of Hawaii as a host destination.
As always, the scientific program will cover a wide range of global pediatric oncology topics, with a particular emphasis on research from cooperative groups participating in the PARC programme. A comprehensive agenda is being developed to address global health topics and highlight updates related to the WHO Global Initiative on Childhood Cancer, where SIOP holds the distinction of being a recognized non-state actor.
The SIOP 2024 Congress is the place to hear the latest research findings in the field and to catalyse new ideas, generated by the multi-disciplinary attendance for which it is renowned. It provides a wonderful platform on which to present your own research and share knowledge and ideas. “Amazing multidisciplinary session on reducing the late toxicity of upper abdominal tumour treatment at SIOP2024. Excellent lectures by Marry van den Heuvel-Eibrink (oncology perspective), Max Pachl (surgical perspective), and Christine Hill-Kayser (radiation oncology perspective), followed by a lively panel discussion.
From a pediatric radiology perspective the conclusion is that image-guidance during treatment is essential. However, the potential role of interventional radiology is largely unexplored! So there is still work to be done.”

Greetings from Honolulu! I’m excited to share insights from the second day of the 56th Congress of the International Society of Pediatric Oncology (SIOP). Today’s sessions were particularly enlightening, especially the “President’s lecture” focusing on the 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 in pediatric oncology.
This session was a standout session with three compelling presentations on qualitative research from Martha Grootenhuis (NL), Elianeth Kiteni (TZ), Dylan Graetz (USA) and Rawad Rihani (JO).
“Qualitative research transforms stories and experiences into science. It allows us to explore questions that quantitative methods or other approaches do not permit.” Dylan Graetz and Rawad Rihani.
This session underscored the immense value of qualitative methods in our field, offering unique insights into the lived experiences of patients, families, and healthcare providers. I am really happy to see this session in such a big congress.
Another inspiring presentation came from Caitlyn Duffy, who discussed implementation science. Her talk addressed a critical question in our field: How do we transition from evidence-based interventions to real-world applications?
This presentation highlighted the importance of not just developing effective interventions, but also ensuring they can be successfully implemented in diverse healthcare settings.
𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:
As we reach the midpoint of the congress, I’m struck by the breadth and depth of research being conducted in pediatric oncology. The emphasis on qualitative research and implementation science reminds us of the multifaceted approach needed to advance care for our young patients.
