A.J. Cimino: Exciting customer interactions at ASTRO 2024

“What a way to start out the Month of October!

So many fantastic customer interactions at ASTRO2024. It was a big year for Elekta, unveiling a new Adaptive CT Linac, “EVO” driven by Elekta One Planning powered by MIM to improve workflow and efficiency for both online and offline planning. GPU-based optimizations are showing 90%+ speed improvements! The benefit to reducing table time in online adaptive treatments is massive and will make a big step forward with adoption into mainstream RO practice.

In the Unity MR-Linac front, Dr. Detsky of Sunnybrook presented his abstract on the UNITED trial which won accolades at the conference for making major advances in treatment of high-grade gliomas, the 1st in over 25 years! Reducing margin and dose to healthy tissue by up to 40–70% due to the precision of daily MR imaging and weekly plan adaptation.

The week continued to NYC for Immunorad at NYP Weill Cornell with my colleague Jolie Wetzler. Amazing to hear how advances in low dose RT combined with immunotherapies are showing an additive benefit to unlock further advances in cancer care. So much to learn about the abscopal effect in which treatment of one metastatic tumor can kick off concurrent shrinkage for other tumors in the localized area.

Rounded off the next weekend in London to host Dr. Xun Jia of Johns Hopkins to see the Elekta Linac Manufacturing Facility in Crawley while meeting with senior members of the Elekta leadership team. My first time to Crawley, I was quite amazed and inspired by the overall team, facility and process that goes into making our linacs.

Very energized going into the end of 2024 with many great opportunities and partnerships ahead!
