Honoring Dr Stella Arakelyan and welcoming Dr Mark Lawler as ICC’s New Research Lead

” On behalf of the ICC team, we extend our deepest gratitude to our outgoing Research Lead, Dr Stella Arakelyan. Her unwavering dedication and exceptional leadership have propelled our research efforts over the past years. Under her guidance, ICC has published numerous impactful papers in prestigious journals including The Lancet, Journal of Clinical Oncology, JCO Global Oncology, and PLOS Medicine Global Health.
As we bid farewell to Dr. Arakelyan, we are excited to welcome our new Research Lead, Prof. Mark Lawler. An internationally renowned scientist, Mark brings with him a wealth of experience with over 200 publications in top-tier journals and a remarkable track record of national and international awards.
Mark is currently the Associate Director of Health Data Research Wales-Northern Ireland, where he is at the forefront of innovative precision medicine and public health strategies utilizing Big Data. His commitment to patient-centered research and addressing cancer inequalities is truly inspiring.
Among his many achievements, Mark was the architect of the European Cancer Patient’s Bill of Rights, launched in the European Parliament on World Cancer Day 2014, which received the 2018 European Health Award. His work has also been pivotal in shaping the European Code of Cancer Practice and addressing the impact of Covid-19 on cancer services.
Recently, Mark was recognized with the Royal College of Physicians Excellence in Patient Care Award and the Irish Association for Cancer Research’s Outstanding Contribution to Cancer Research Award for his groundbreaking efforts in cancer research and care.
We are thrilled to have Mark lead our research initiatives and are confident that his vision and expertise will continue to advance our mission to improve cancer care for all.

Dr. Jemma Arakelyan is a medical oncologist and the chief executive officer of The Institute of Cancer and Crisis. She is a Ph.D. candidate at the City University of Hong Kong. Her research focuses on developing new anticancer treatments and understanding the underlying mechanisms of cancer progression.
In addition to her academic pursuits, she is an active member of several scientific organizations, including the European School of Oncology (ESO), where she served as an ambassador in Armenia from 2020-2022. Dr. Arakelyan is also the president of the Institute of Cancer and Crisis. The Institute is dedicated to promoting awareness and support for cancer patients facing critical situations like war, pandemic, etc.
