Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu – “Transformative power of grassroots partnerships in enhancing cancer control in low and middle-income countries” at the AACR23

Quoting Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu on LinkedIn:

“I’m thrilled to have joined the 16th American Association of Cancer Research Conference on the Science of Cancer Health Disparities, where I discussed the “Transformative power of grassroots partnerships in enhancing cancer control in low and middle-income countries”. The current cancer burden is one of concern, with millions suffering due to limited resources and poor awareness. By building grassroots partnerships instead of working in silos, we can ensure that cancer control is within reach for all, regardless of where they live.

I emphasized the value of partnering with community gatekeepers, such as traditional and religious leaders, who possess significant clout to mobilize communities and arming them with the right information. Yet, their role is often overlooked in work plans, cancer research and trials. My experience in Nigeria was similar to that of another esteemed colleague from the global North Heather White. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the AACR for providing this invaluable platform to bring up critical issues.

Lastly, congratulations to Folakemi Odedina as the recipient of the 2023 AACR Distinguished Lectureship award on the Science of Cancer Health Disparities. Truly well deserved.”
