UICC Welcomes UN Declaration on Antimicrobial Resistance – A Positive Step for Cancer Care

UICC applauds the significant commitment made during the 79th United Nations General Assembly high-level meeting on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) held on September 26 in New York.

Global leaders have set ambitious targets, including a 10% reduction in AMR-related deaths by 2030 and ensuring that at least 60% of countries implement funded national action plans on AMR.

This milestone is critical for cancer patients, who rely on effective antibiotics and antifungals to manage infections during treatment. AMR poses a severe threat to these essential therapies, making it imperative that this issue remains a global priority.

Sonali Johnson, UICC Head of Knowledge and Advocacy, remarked, “The declaration is a crucial step forward in protecting cancer patients worldwide.

AMR poses a significant threat to cancer care, and we are pleased to see world leaders recognize this in their commitment.”

The political declaration underscores the vital connection between AMR and cancer treatment, emphasizing the urgent need for targeted action.

Without it, modern cancer care risks being severely compromised.

UICC’s advocacy, alongside member organizations such as the Norwegian and Swedish Cancer Societies, was instrumental in ensuring that cancer was included in the political declaration.

Additionally, cancer care featured prominently in ‘Lifeline’, an initiative supported by Dame Sally Davies, the UK Special Envoy on Antimicrobial Resistance.

During the UNGA meeting, UICC hosted a side event that convened stakeholders from the cancer and non-communicable disease communities, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and researchers.

The discussions focused on aligning the fight against AMR with the needs of cancer patients and implementing strategies outlined in the declaration.

UICC and its partners will continue to collaborate with global health bodies to uphold these commitments, aiming for improved outcomes for cancer patients worldwide.
