Paul Chilwesa: WHO AFRO Integrated Women’s cancers Project and Breast Cancer Month.
Paul Chilwesa, Population Health Impact Leader at F. Hoffmann-La Roche AG, recently posted on LinkedIn:
“In order to achieve the goal of universal health care across Africa, we must integrate the diagnosis and treatment of NCDs. Breast cancer is a strong starting point for this integration as it impacts so many women – it accounts for 27.7% of all cancer cases in Africa, resulting in 85,787 deaths in 2020 alone.
A new WHO African Region Project highlights the way in which public and private organizations can work together to improve patient outcomes in NCDs (SDGs 3 & 17). It is an exciting step on the path to universal health care and true health equity. By integrating detection, treatment, and care for breast cancer, we start to better shape our health systems to deal with other conditions. Technologies, equipment, and expertise will be transferable across many common cancers. Additionally, women can be screened for NCDs, STDs, and mental health concerns alongside their cancer care.
As Breast Cancer Awareness Month turns more attention to this fight, we are proud that this program provides a jumping-off point for a streamlined, integrated health system that better serves patients.”
