Sharon Kapambwe: A week well spent at the 3rd AWACAN-ED-Africa awareness of Cancer and Early Diagnosis in Cape Town

Sharon Kapambwe, Technical Officer of Cancer Control at the World Health Organization, shared on LinkedIn:

”A week well spent at the 3rd AWACAN-ED-Africa aWareness of CANcer and Early Diagnosis in Cape Town South Africa.

AWACAN-ED research aims to use innovative approaches with digital technologies and other in primary care and public health to advance early diagnosis of cervical, breast and colorectal cancer in Southern Africa. The program also aims to develop early career researchers by giving them opportunities to study, collaborate and have mentorship from regional and international experts.

Interacting with students from different African countries was so fulfilling. The mix of clinical, social science, PHC, health economics, etc is how we needed to approach health. This new cadre of researchers will truly understand that a patient is only truly seen, when seen holistically. Was honoured to chair the External Advisory Board for the project during the week.

My special thanks to Profs Jennifer Moodley UCT and Fional Walter QMUL. Prof. Mike Chirenje always grateful for your mentorship. Thank you for this opportunity to learn from the students as much as we gave feedback.

Dean Faculty of Health Sciences UCT Prof. Lionel Green-Thompson for reminding us all that work is only if it positively impacts another life. Western Cape Head of Health and Wellness Department Dr. Keith Cloete for pointing out that the patient in front of us brings with them all their complexities and our health systems should respond as such. Special thanks to Prof. Verna Vanderpuye, Richard Sullivan, Partha Basu, Satish Gopal, John Ataguba, Bothwell Guzha, Suzanne Scott, Tasleem Ras for excellent delivery of lectures and discussions.”
