Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu: Do children get cancer? Sadly, yes, they do
Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu shared a post on LinkedIn:
” ‘Do children get cancer?’.
Or
‘Oh!.., So even children can get cancer?’
These are questions I hear often. Sadly, the answer is, yes, they do.
As we start a month of awareness on childhood cancer, we are pleased to formally launch a series of Information, Education, and Communication materials, on Childhood Cancer in 5 Nigerian languages.
This is the result of a collaboration between the First Ladies against Cancer (FLAC) and Bio Ventures Global Health, in collaboration with International Society of Paediatric Oncology – SIOP and University of Abuja Teaching Hospital. The materials have been endorsed by the International Society of Paediatric Oncology as well as the Paediatric Association of Nigeria.
In Nigeria, and many LMICs, childhood cancers are tragically detected at late stages, leading to a lower survival rate. This is a reality we cannot ignore. This is why, along with our partners, we created these materials in English, Hausa, Yoruba, Ibo, and Pidgin.
The idea is to raise awareness on the early signs of childhood cancer and introduce navigators who can guide patients and their families on what to do and where to go if symptoms are discovered.
I commend all those who put time and effort into this project, especially my sisters Prof. Uche Agumadu and Dr.U. Offiong. I also thank the CMD Prof Ahmed Ekele, Prof Yawe, and all our friends for always giving us a warm welcome and extending a hand of collaboration.
Please email [email protected] if you wish to reproduce and distribute these assets.”
