Dégi László Csaba: Bridging the gap in Cancer Survivorship care
Dégi László Csaba, President of European Cancer Organisation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Bridging the gap in Cancer Survivorship care.
Today, I had the privilege of presenting at the COST Action Conference on Cancer Survivorship, focusing on ‘Empowering Cancer Survivors: Innovations and Insights through Digital Solutions.’
Key takeaways from my presentation:
- Despite increased survival rates, many cancer survivors lack clear guidance on post-treatment care.
- Current needs assessments often fail to provide clear patient pathways, leaving survivors feeling lost and unsupported.
- There’s a critical gap in cooperation between hospital care and primary care, described as a ‘big black hole’ in the survivorship journey.
Our CANPRIM project in Romania highlighted the crucial role of family medicine in reducing cancer distress and emphasized the need for integrating psychosocial care into primary healthcare.
Moving forward, we must:
- Clarify the purpose of needs assessments
- Implement digital tools for ongoing support
- Improve coordination between hospital and primary care
- Start survivorship care planning early
Let’s work together to create seamless, supportive pathways for cancer survivors. What innovations have you seen in survivorship care? How can we better support those navigating life after cancer?
