“Well done, Siobhan Gaynor and Prof. Seamus O’Reilly on recent research. This is the first time in Ireland that a piece of research has been developed by patients for patients with the same rigorous approach as a clinical trial.

While secondary breast cancer has the highest prevalence of all stage IV cancers, it is anticipated that the outcomes of this work will also inform other patient-led research for stage IV cancers such as prostate, colorectal, and lung.”

Frances Ní Fhlannchadha is the Patient Safety and Risk Management Lead at Tallaght University Hospital. Her work centers on enhancing patient safety, fostering effective teamwork, improving communication, and driving quality improvement initiatives.

Siobhan Gaynor is a medical researcher with over 30 years of experience who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019. In 2022, she was diagnosed with stage IV metastatic breast cancer and now plays a role in Cancer Trials Ireland as co-Chief Investigator for a metastatic breast cancer survey. Her work is focused on integrating patient perspectives into clinical research and advancing cancer treatment strategies.

Seamus O’Reilly, BSc MD PhD FRCPI, is a Consultant Medical Oncologist at Cork University Hospital. As vice clinical lead at Cancer Trials Ireland, he launched the National Green Cancer Clinical Trials Initiative in 2022. He is a founding trustee and co-chairperson of Cork ARC Cancer Support House, Deputy Editor of BJC Reports, and serves on the Executive Board of the Breast International Group.
