“【Candidacy Statement for UICC Board of Directors】
As a committed medical oncologist/Cancer Survivor and the Director of the University of Hawai’i Cancer Center (UHCC), I am honored to present my candidacy for the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) Board of Directors.
My extensive experience in cancer research, particularly in breast cancer, combined with my dedication to enhancing healthcare outcomes for diverse communities, positions me well to contribute meaningfully to the UICC’s mission.
Throughout my career, I have focused on pioneering advancements in cancer treatment, particularly in the realm of early-phase clinical trials.
As a two-time cancer survivor, improving patient outcomes is my passion. As a leader in the field, I have always prioritized collaboration, diversity, and the inclusion of underrepresented populations in clinical research.
In addition to my role at the UHCC, I am proud to be involved with CancerX in Japan, a public-private partnership aimed at driving innovations in cancer care through digital health and emerging technologies.
My work with CancerX aligns with my commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to address the disparities in cancer care, particularly in underserved and geographically isolated populations.
This involvement has provided me with a unique perspective on the intersection of technology, healthcare, and patient advocacy, which I believe will be invaluable to the UICC.
At the UHCC, I oversee a team of dedicated professionals who are committed to addressing the unique cancer challenges faced by the populations of Hawai‘i and the Pacific.
Our work emphasizes research, community outreach, education, and culturally sensitive and impactful prevention strategies.
My commitment to DEI initiatives has been a driving force in my leadership, ensuring that all voices are heard and valued.
If elected to the UICC Board of Directors, I will bring a unique perspective rooted in my clinical expertise and deep understanding of the challenges faced by diverse and geographically isolated populations.
I am eager to collaborate with global leaders to drive forward the UICC’s goals, particularly in the areas of equitable cancer care, research innovation, and the development of a diverse global cancer control workforce.
Mahalo for considering my candidacy. For those who are members of UICC, please consider voting for me.
I look forward to the opportunity to serve and contribute to our shared vision of a world where cancer is controlled and all individuals, regardless of their location or background, have access to the care and support they need.”
