Updates in UCSF Section of Cardiology Oncology
Javid Moslehi, William Grossman Distinguished Professor in Cardiology, Section Chief, Cardio-Oncology and Immunology at UCSF School of Medicine, shared a post on X:
“Lots of University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Section of Cardiology Oncology updates as we start the new academic year. Our faculty is growing now totaling 6, we have new fellows and team members and lots to celebrate! UCSF Cardiology and UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center so without further delay.
Congratulations to Amir Munir for joining the faculty as our sixth cardio-oncologist. Amir worked with Saptarsi Haldar at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine, Eric N. Olson as a Sarnoff Foundation, residency at Brigham and women’s Hospital, Brigham and women’s Medicine Residents and UCSF Cardiology!
Amir Munir was also a recipient of Sarnoff Scholar (career development) award. Hisresearch will focus on the novel immune checkpoint LAG-3 which is being targeted for cancer therapy but which increases risk of Cardiovascular complications including myocarditis!
Huge congratulations to Juan Qin! Juan was awarded AHA 2nd Century Early Faculty Independence Award and UCSF catalyst award! American Heart Association, American Heart News, AHA Science, UCSF Catalyst. She is developing new treatments for inflammatory heart disease!
Alan Baik just hit for the cycle as far as career development awards go! Having already been awarded a Harold Amos award, he received an National Institutes of Health K08 for his work on hypoxic signaling!
Alan Baik also was awarded the highlycompetitive Burroughs Wellcome Fund! He will bestudying the intersection of cholesterol mechanism with hypoxic signaling! Huge implications for the new cancer treatment targeting hypoxia and metabolism!
Huge congratulations to Amanda Schnell Heringer for being promoted to Director of Nursing for all of ambulatory cardiology! UCSF Heart Health, UCSF Cardiology, UCSF School of Nursing Amanda was our first nurse in Cardiology Oncology when I moved to UCSF in early 2022! Really helped get our clinic off the ground!
Congratulations to Alan Gutierrez for being awarded a second year of Sarnoff Fellowship! Alan is a Yale School of Medicine medical student who is simply killing it in the lab. Lots of cool projects but the most ambitious one, developing a pre-clinical model of carcinoid heart disease!
Richard Baylis is our newest Cardiology Oncology Fellow. Did an MD/PhD with Gary Owens at Medical Scientist Training Program at University of Virginia, Ricky A Baylis, residency at Massachusetts General Hospital for Internal Medicine Residents and now cardiology fellow at UC San Francisco. Interested in T cell biology in Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and an outstanding teacher!
Jaya Mallidi who is heading our Cardiology Oncology efforts at SFGH was awarded the Rector Award for Teaching Excellence! Jaya also APD for cardiology fellowship!
Finally Amy Lin, our 5th faculty recruit – is doing an A+ job setting up the CHIP clinic in our section! Amy is a University of Toronto MD/PhD Program graduate having worked with Tak Mak, completed cardiology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s CV Fellows, Brigham and Women’s Cardiovascular Life Science and worked with Ben Ebert as a post-doctor!”
