The State of Oncology in 2026 With ZS

Overview

Event Highlights

  • Oncology growth is shifting toward subtype-led strategies, earlier-stage disease and tumor segments where incidence, survival and unmet need create clearer opportunity.
  • As development crowds around derisked biology and loss of exclusivity (LOE) risk grows, resilient portfolios will require tighter links between target choice, modality choice, evidence strategy and external innovation.
  • Regional and affiliate success increasingly depends on incorporating local cancer burden, pricing exposure, regulatory expectations and launch sequencing into strategy earlier in the product lifecycle.
  • In the U.S., commercial performance will depend on tailoring launch investment, removing barriers across the patient journey and addressing access, affordability, health system capacity and workflow friction.
  • Policy and LOE pressures are compressing revenue windows, making pricing, indication strategy, launch sequence and value-protection tactics more interdependent.

The next decade of oncology growth will look different from the last. In our 2026 outlook, we explore why leaders will need to look beyond crowded late-stage markets and focus on earlier-stage disease, underserved tumors, care delivery friction and the role of AI in improving access and outcomes.

This is not a “more of the same” oncology story. The analysis points to a fundamental shift in the value pool, with implications for portfolio strategy, launch planning and how companies engage across the care continuum. Read more here.

Why this matters:

  • The oncology growth engine is moving upstream. Future value will come from earlier-stage disease and underserved tumors, not crowded late-stage markets.
  • Many portfolios are pointed in the wrong direction. Companies optimized for late-stage U.S. competition risk chasing a shrinking value pool.
  • AI is no longer optional; it’s foundational. Data-driven care models are becoming core to diagnosis, treatment selection and patient flow.
  • Execution, not innovation alone, will differentiate winners. Integrating health systems, regions and affiliates earlier is critical to converting science into impact.
