Pope Leo XIV has announced that he will undergo surgery in the coming days to remove a localized lung nodule detected during recent routine medical examinations.
Speaking after the Sunday Angelus prayer, the 71-year-old pontiff confirmed that the lesion was caught early and that he accepted his medical team’s recommendation to proceed with resection.
“During some recent medical examinations, the doctors found a small, localized nodule in my lung,”
Pope Leo XIV shared.
“The doctors believe that it is best to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to remove it.”
According to the Vatican Press Office, the operation is scheduled for early this week, with an estimated post-operative monitoring period of approximately one week.
The Pope also expressed his gratitude for the support and prayers of the faithful, saying:
“I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers. Thank you, and happy Sunday!”
