“Early Survivorship Matters: Beyond Returning to School
A new study from India, published in Pediatric Blood and Cancer, examines early survivorship outcomes among 596 childhood cancer survivors-focusing on school reintegration, nutritional status, and revaccination.
- 96.8% of survivors rejoined school-but 8.8% subsequently dropped out, highlighting that return to school is only the first step toward sustained educational participation.
- Nutritional patterns are changing, with a shift from undernutrition toward increasing overweight, emphasizing the need for ongoing nutritional surveillance.
- Revaccination remains an important component of preventive survivorship care.
The findings reinforce the importance of structured, multidisciplinary early survivorship care that addresses educational engagement, nutrition, preventive health, and psychosocial needs-not simply survival.
Survivorship begins when treatment ends. Supporting children to thrive requires continued care, connection, and follow-up.”
