The Institute of Cancer Research – ICR shared on LinkedIn:
“We’re delighted to share that more than 1,000 people have now joined the FAST-Forward Boost trial, the UK’s largest-ever breast cancer radiotherapy study.
The trial, which is led by researchers at the ICR and is funded by the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research), is investigating whether a full course of radiotherapy, including an additional tumour-site ‘boost’ dose, can be safely delivered in just five days rather than up to three weeks which would cut treatment time by up to 75 per cent.
FAST-Forward Boost, which is managed by the Clinical Trials and Statistics Unit at the ICR (ICR-CTSU) with Professor Anna Kirby from The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and the ICR as Chief Investigator, has been expanded to 39 hospitals and cancer centres across the UK. Recruitment onto the trial started in April 2025, with many participating sites introducing advanced radiotherapy techniques as part of the study.
Professor Kristian Helin, Chief Executive of The Institute of Cancer Research, London, said:
‘Clinical trials like FAST-Forward Boost are essential not only for improving treatment for people with cancer, but for finding better and more efficient ways of delivering care across the NHS.’
This is an extraordinary milestone in breast cancer research, thank you to every participant who has taken part so far and to the dedicated teams across the NHS helping to deliver this vital research.
