Implementing the GBCI: Insights from City Cancer Challenge

City Cancer Challenge (C/Can) sharen on LinkedIn:

“Thank you to everyone who joined the launch of the Guide on How to Implement the Global Breast Cancer Initiative (GBCI) in Practice with World Health Organization on 20 October.

3 points from the discussion

  • The GBCI sets clear targets, and the challenge is reaching them. As Natia Verdzadze, GBCI Project Manager at C/Can, put it, the framework ‘tells us what to achieve, but not how to achieve it on the ground.’ The guide sets out how, drawing on four cities’ experience.
  • Strengthening one service on its own won’t change care. Dr Alfredo Polo, Director of Technical Cooperation and Capacity Building at C/Can, explained that, for example, pathology or radiotherapy can’t be fixed in isolation. Care also depends on the ‘connective tissue’ of coordination and quality improvement, and the guide brings these steps together in the right sequence.
  • Patients belong in decision-making. Prof Nana Mebonia, Head of Division, National Center for Disease Control and Public Health, Georgia, shared that patients are now represented on Georgia’s National Cancer Council. ‘The voices of patients must be an integral part of health policy development and efforts to improve cancer care and prevention.’
