ASTRO24: 15 Posts Not To Miss From Day 4
The 66th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) took place from September 29 to October 2, 2024, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.
The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) is a prominent professional organization dedicated to enhancing the field of radiation oncology. Established in 1958, ASTRO’s mission centers on improving patient care through a multifaceted approach that includes education, research, and advocacy.
With both live and virtual attendance options, the meeting fostered wide participation among radiation oncology professionals.
The theme for this year’s meeting, “Targeting Provider Wellness for Exceptional Patient Care,” highlighted the critical link between the well-being of healthcare providers and the quality of care they deliver to patients. This focus underscores the importance of supporting providers to enhance their mental and physical health, ultimately benefiting patient outcomes.
Here are some highlights from ASTRO24 Day 4:
“Final day of ASTRO24 with an early morning educational planning committee meeting. I had a fabulous time this year and am already looking forward to ASTRO25.
Mark your calendars: September 28 – October 1st, 2025, Moscone Center, San Francisco.”
“The most meaningful thing is catching up with friends at ASTRO24. Phuoc Tran (not on twitter) has been such a friend since residency when we sat next to each other for 4 years. He’s moving our field forward with his tiredless work.”
“I’m so proud to call this ASTRO Gold Medalist a friend. He helped me SO MUCH over the last 1.5 years as I dealt with Head and Neck cancer. He and wife Sarah regularly checked on me from afar with love and kindness. Congrats!!”
“Loved the DEI oral session at ASTRO24. Dr. Vonetta M. Williams expertly summarized the presentations, pointing out key steps to close equity gaps in:
- cancer screening
- clinical trial enrollment
- treatment and survivorship”
“Thank you to everyone who attended ASTRO24 in Washington, DC this week. The city and venue were fantastic!
With the growing size of the ASTRO meeting, the host city and convention center must meet specific requirements. The DC convention center and Marriott, both relatively new, made it possible to host ASTRO24 here after 33 years!
I anticipate very positive attendee feedback, and I predict the ASTRO Annual Meeting will return to DC in the future!
It was extra-special to celebrate the 22 year career of ASTRO CEO Laura Thevenot in her home city. We also heard incoming CEO, Dr. Vivek Kavadi address the membership on Monday morning.
The energy at ASTRO24 was incredible! Huge thanks to all the attendees who brought their best, especially our amazing trainees and record number of medical students. The future of radiation oncology is in great hands!
It’s amazing to see in-person attendance making a strong comeback. From no meeting in 2020 to 11,000 this year, in-person connections truly matter. Virtual just can’t compare!
To those who attended ASTRO24 – thank you! For those who couldn’t make it, we missed you and hope to see you at future meetings. Looking forward to seeing everyone next fall in San Francisco!”
“Mahalo e Dr. Fumiko Ladd Chino for always being the exemplar mentor that every trainee deserves. Truly a gold standard for early career mentorship. Grateful to have your guidance all these years!”
“Thank you ASTRO24! It was great to meet colleagues and friends, especially from LATAM, and see how our specialty continues to innovate. It was a great time working as a social media promoter for ASTRO. See you next year in San Francisco!”
“Georgians at ASTRO24!

“Just wrapped up my first ASTRO24! Thankful for the opportunity to have met inspiring leaders in RadOnc, make lifelong connections and friends, and engage in some amazing science with brilliant minds. Best field, best specialty, best people. Can’t wait for San Fran next year!”
“Fantastic talk by Anna Dornisch on P-CARE: an integrated, ancestry, family history assessment of lifetime Prostate Cancer risk Will be used in national RCT of precision screening in VA led by Jason Vasssy.”
“Great to see some of our Irish trained Radiation Oncology SpR’s currently doing international clinical fellowships presenting their research at ASTRO24. Well done to Aisling Glynn, Geraldine Murphy, Emma Connolly.”
“When Dr.Chino and Dr. Chino gave us the perfect excuse for another ASTRO24 sign pic!
Congrats again, Dr Chino well-deserved ASTRO Fellow 2024!”
