“Smaller doses of COVID-19 booster vaccines can provide long-lasting immunity, helping to reduce costs and improve access to vaccination, according to new research.
The international research program, led by Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) and funded by CEPI (Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations), involved more than 2,000 participants across Australia, Indonesia and Mongolia. The findings provide new evidence that will help shape future COVID-19 booster strategies.

The research found fractional doses, where people receive half the standard vaccine amount, produced strong immune responses that remained comparable to full-dose boosters.
MCRI Dr Nadia Mazarakis said the findings could also help inform vaccine dosing and options during future pandemics, supporting more equitable vaccination programs, particularly in low-income countries.
To which Tsetsegsaikhan Batmunkh, Director of the Public Health Department at the Ministry of Health of Mongolia, added:
“It was a great opportunity to collaborate with the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) and lead the Mongolian study assessing the duration of immunity following different COVID-19 vaccination schedules, including Sputnik V.
This collaboration generated important evidence on the persistence of vaccine-induced immunity and contributed to informing immunization policy and future vaccination strategies.
