Tejas Patil, Vice Head of Clinical Affairs and Thoracic Clinical Research Director in the Division of Oncology at the University of Colorado, Charles Jiang, Assistant Professor in Hematology and Oncology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, post on X:
“A sobering look at clinical trial participation across diverse practice backgrounds. While there are many reasons, these were most striking
- Of nearly 200k pts with cancers, only 5.4% enrolled in a trial!
- 23% of oncologists enrolled to 84% of trials.
- 30% of oncologists never enrolled a single patient on studies, even when they were studies available at their site! That last one stings and we can definitely do better. “
Quoting Charles Jiang:
“Why do so few patients with advanced cancer join clinical trials?
We usually blame the patient barriers: mistrust, travel, cost, eligibility. Our new paper in JAMA Network Open asks a different question: how much depends on the doctor and the clinic?
