Tanvi Visal: Investigating the metastatic cascade in TNBC and uncovers CD38 as a potential interventional target

Tanvi Visal, PHD Candidate at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, shared her recent article on LinkedIn:

I’m excited to share my latest first-author publication from my PhD at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

Our study, titled “Accumulation of CD38 in Hybrid Epithelial/Mesenchymal Cells Promotes Immune Remodeling and Metastasis in Breast Cancer,” investigates the metastatic cascade in Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) and uncovers CD38 as a potential interventional target. We focus on hybrid epithelial/mesenchymal cells, which utilize CD38 as a survival strategy to sustain metastasis. Co-targeting CD38 and PDL1, improves anti-tumor immune responses and reduces tumor growth in preclinical models, opening up a promising therapeutic approach for TNBC, a highly metastatic disease.

This research wouldn’t have been possible without my incredible mentors and coauthors. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from two exceptional mentors, Sendurai Mani and George Calin. Together, your mentorship has shaped my research journey and brought this work to fruition.

I want to reflect on this journey and share a thought for other PhD students: At times, it may feel like you’re lost in the process; wandering without a clear path. But looking back, you realize that every challenge, every detour, was part of a beautifully connected roadmap that led you toward something impactful. Trust the process! ✨

I’m eager to see how this research can contribute to future treatment strategies for TNBC. As I approach the completion of my PhD, I’m excited to take the next step in my career. Despite the challenging job market, I’m actively seeking oncology-focused roles where I can leverage my expertise in cancer research and contribute to advancing therapeutic innovations.

If you’re looking for someone who’s passionate about pushing boundaries and making a difference—well, you might just find your next collaborator right here.
