George Vlachogiannis: Salivary Biomarkers May Aid Early Detection of Periodontitis During Radiotherapy

George Vlachogiannis, Managing Editor of Cancer Control at Sage, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Ella Brandt et al. published in Cancer Control:

“aMMP-8 and MMP-9: Potential Biomarkers for periodontitis Progression in Patients Receiving Radiotherapy for Head and Neck Carcinoma
In a new Cancer Control study, Dr Ella Brandt from the University of Helsinki and colleagues identify active MMP-8 (aMMP-8) and total MMP-9 (tMMP-9) as potential biomarkers for early detection of periodontitis progression in patients undergoing radiotherapy for head and neck cancer.
The study shows that radiotherapy significantly increases aMMP-8 and tMMP-9 levels, both of which are associated with clinical attachment loss, a hallmark of periodontal disease, and underscores the growing role of salivary biomarkers in precision oral health monitoring during cancer treatment. Importantly, a simple, non-invasive point-of-care aMMP-8 test may help identify high-risk patients before clinical symptoms emerge, enabling early preventive interventions.”
