“I’m pleased to share our recent publication in European Journal of Surgical Oncology: ‘Comparative oncological efficacy of chemotherapy, cytoreductive surgery with or without HIPEC in recurrent ovarian cancer: A network meta-analysis’
This work was born during my research year at the Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori di Milano and took shape after the stimulating discussions at the Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International (PSOGI) Congress in Barcelona.
It is a network meta-analysis of randomized trials with platinum-sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer. We compared standard systemic chemotherapy with secondary cytoreductive surgery (SCS) ± HIPEC.
Key findings:
- Neither SCS nor SCS + HIPEC showed a significant improvement in 5-year OS compared with chemotherapy alone in the overall analysis.
- Both surgical strategies significantly prolonged PFS.
- After excluding the GOG-0213 trial, SCS + HIPEC was associated with a significant OS benefit.
- In CC-1 patients, SCS + HIPEC appeared to offer an OS and PFS advantage.
