Rahul Kumar: Largest Review Maps 3 Decades of Childhood Cancer Survival in India

Rahul Kumar, Medical Oncology Trainee at AIIMS, New Delhi, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Hot off the press!

Delighted to share that our work has been published in JCO Global Oncology JCO Journals.

To our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive scoping review and the largest synthesis of childhood cancer survival outcomes from India, bringing together 182 studies involving 22,886 children across three decades.

The review maps survival outcomes across pediatric malignancies, highlights progress in selected cancers, and identifies persistent disease-specific, geographic, and reporting gaps. It also underscores the need for stronger national childhood cancer registries, multicentre research, standardized outcome reporting, better research infrastructure, and sustained policy commitment to improve equity in childhood cancer care.

I am deeply grateful to my mentors Prof. Sameer Bakhshi, Dr. Deepam Pushpam, Atul Batra and Shuvadeep Ganguly; my co-first author Dr. Shivam Bansal; and all my co-authors for their invaluable guidance, mentorship, and collaboration.

We are especially grateful for the international collaboration and global perspective contributed by Dr. André M. Ilbawi, World Health Organization, and Carlos Rodriguez-Galindo, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Their contributions strengthened the policy relevance and global context of this work.

Sincere thanks to Poonam Bagai, Sonal Sharma, Swetambri Sharma, Ekta Rahul, and Abin Sheref for their important contributions.
