Nashwa Kordy: Epidemiologic Analysis of Colorectal Cancer in Southern Egypt
Nashwa Kordy, Head of Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Science Computing Department at Shefaa Al Orman Hospitals, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“New Publication Alert
I’m pleased to share the publication of our recent study in BMC Gastroenterology: Epidemiologic and clinical profiles of colorectal cancer in Southern Egypt
This study presents the first comprehensive epidemiologic analysis of colorectal cancer in Southern Egypt (Luxor and Qena), based on data from Shefa Al Orman International Cancer Hospitals between 2018 and 2022.
Key findings include:
• A total of 613 patients were analyzed
• 23% were diagnosed before the age of 45
• 38% had rectal primaries
• 28% presented with metastatic disease
• 5-year incidence: 4.5 per 100,000 overall; 1.3 per 100,000 for early-onset CRC
• 58% of patients were alive at last follow-up
Our findings underscore the need for targeted early detection strategies, improved access to timely care, and future research into lifestyle and socioeconomic risk factors specific to this underserved region.
I am grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with exceptional colleagues on this work: Prof. Emad Shash, Dr. Doris Chiu, Prof. Noha Rashad, and Prof. Amr Soliman.
Further research on the epidemiology of gastrointestinal cancers in Upper Egypt is in the making!”
