Matthew Kurian: Does Timing Matter in Postpartum Breast Cancer?

Matthew Kurian, Executive Committee Member at KYSCO, shared on LinkedIn:

“Does timing matter in postpartum breast cancer? New data suggest it may.

A new study published in npj Breast Cancer suggests that breast cancers diagnosed within 3 years of childbirth may have more aggressive genomic features.

Key findings:
  • Higher Oncotype DX recurrence scores within 3 years postpartum.
  • Increased genomic risk may be concentrated in the early postpartum period rather than extending uniformly across 5–10 years.
My perspective:

I’m increasingly seeing younger women diagnosed with breast cancer following childbirth, often with aggressive features.

What concerns me most is how many were initially told their symptoms were simply postpartum changes or mastitis, potentially delaying diagnosis.

Not every breast change after childbirth is benign. Persistent symptoms deserve further evaluation.”
