Humberto Martinez-Cordero: Advancing Cancer Care Through Clinical Trials and Earlier Access to Innovation

Humberto Martinez-Cordero, Hematologist, Coordinator of the Hematology and Transplant Unit at Central Military Hospital Colombia, shared on X:

“As a cancer researcher at Instituto Nacional de Cancerología, and in agreement with my co-investigators from SWOG in the United States, we have been able to confirm that patients who participate in clinical trials show better outcomes in terms of overall survival and progression-free survival.

This can be explained by the intensive monitoring according to protocol, greater adherence to treatment, and, above all, earlier access to the most innovative and effective therapies against cancer.

What is especially relevant is that science, in the end, also has a clear impact on the financial side: these trials exceptionally reduce costs to the healthcare system. Investigational medications are usually provided free of charge by the sponsor, which generates significant savings in pharmacy, reduces hospitalizations, and optimizes the use of healthcare resources.

It is a source of pride and a privilege to be able to lead these efforts in the country, knowing that scientific progress not only improves patient survival but also contributes economic efficiency and sustainability.”
