Edward Christopher Dee: Breast cancer survivor-led patient advocacy
Edward Christopher Dee, Resident Physician in Radiation Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper he co-authored published in the Lancet Oncology:
“I am so honored to be part of our piece, ‘Breast cancer survivor-led patient advocacy: the ICanServe experience from the Philippines’ led by Kara Magsanoc-Alikpala, patient advocate and founder of the ICanServe Foundation, and Dr. Aveline Marie Ylanan, radiation oncologist, in the Lancet Oncology.
In this paper, we discuss:
Breast Cancer Advocacy and Support: The ICanServe Foundation, founded by breast cancer survivors in the Philippines, leads patient advocacy, health literacy campaigns, and policy lobbying, playing a key role in passing the National Integrated Cancer Control Act in 2019.
Ating Dibdibin Program: This community-based breast cancer control program, initiated in 2008, focuses on prevention, early diagnosis, timely treatment, and patient navigation. Ating Dibdibin partners with local governments to institutionalize breast cancer care, conduct screenings, and establish patient support systems.
Impact and Sustainability: The program has led to earlier breast cancer diagnoses, increased screenings, reduced out-of-pocket expenses, and improved treatment adherence. We highlight front and center the role of patient navigators, sustainable funding, and government collaboration in enhancing cancer care in global and diverse settings.
Thank you, Dr. Cecilia Rivera-Montales, Dr. Juan Martin Magsanoc, and Dr. Michelle Ann Eala.
And thank you, Dr. Cheryl Reeves, Dr. David Collingridge, and The Lancet Group for helping to give a voice to patients and patient advocates in the Philippines.
And most of all, thank you to all the patient advocates, patient navigators, and their families and loved ones, whose work and dedication foster true healing for our patients.”
