David Wazer: Brachytherapy Delivers High-Value Cancer Care

David Wazer, Professor and Chairman of Radiation Oncology at Brown University Health, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Brachytherapy: High Value, High Impact, Right on Target.

On Brachytherapy Awareness Day, we celebrate one of oncology’s most elegant yet underappreciated treatment modalities. For more than a century, brachytherapy has embodied the principle of precision medicine – delivering exceptionally high radiation doses directly to the tumor while sparing surrounding healthy tissue.

Its clinical value is beyond dispute. In prostate, gynecologic, breast, and select head and neck cancers, brachytherapy consistently achieves outstanding local control, excellent functional outcomes, and, in many settings, improved survival. Yet its benefits extend beyond efficacy. By shortening treatment courses, reducing the need for repeated hospital visits, and minimizing radiation exposure to normal tissues, brachytherapy delivers remarkable value for both patients and healthcare systems.

At a time when oncology is challenged to provide better outcomes while controlling costs, brachytherapy stands as a model of high-value cancer care. It combines sophisticated technology with efficient resource utilization, making it one of the most cost-effective treatments available in modern radiation oncology.

Today is a reminder that innovation is not always about something new. Sometimes it is about recognizing and recommitting to the extraordinary power of a proven therapy that continues to improve and save lives.”
