Axel Licha: New Findings on Radiation-Induced Cardiac Toxicity

“Every researcher remembers their first publication. Today is mine.

Seeing my first scientific paper published is something I’ll never forget. I’m proud to share our work, now published in Radiotherapy and Oncology (The Green Journal), investigating radiation-induced cardiac toxicity after SBRT for central and ultracentral lung tumors.

Key findings:

  • 194 patients from three French cancer centers (162 evaluable) were included.
  • Grade ≥2 cardiac toxicity occurred in 8.0% of patients, with a median onset of 12.6 months after SBRT.
  • Two independent predictors of cardiac toxicity were identified: previous stroke (OR 4.17) and primary lung cancer (OR 4.03).
  • Despite these findings, outcomes remained encouraging, with 78.3% local control, 83.4% overall survival at 2 years, and no cardiac-related deaths.
