Amanda Drury: Excited to Share New Insights Into Community-Based Systemic Anticancer Therapy

Amanda Drury, Professor in Nursing at School of Nursing and Midwifery at Trinity College Dublin, shared on LinkedIn:

“As cancer treatments extend beyond acute hospital settings, the question is no longer whether community oncology should expand, but how we do it safely.

Our latest paper, published in Seminars in Oncology Nursing, examines the development and implementation of the Community Intervention Team (CIT) Oncology Service and brings together international evidence with the experiences of the multidisciplinary team who established and continue to deliver the service.

One of the key messages from the paper is that community-based systemic anti-cancer therapy is not simply about moving treatment closer to home.

Successful implementation depends on getting the fundamentals right:

  • Clear clinical governance and accountability between hospital and community services.
  • Investment in skilled multidisciplinary teams and advanced nursing leadership
  • Shared digital infrastructure that supports safe communication and continuity of care.
  • Strong collaboration across organizations and professions.
  • Ongoing evaluation to ensure services remain safe, equitable and responsive to patients’ needs.

As health systems continue to explore new models of care, we hope the practical recommendations from this paper will support others planning and implementing community oncology services.

thank you to our author team, whose experience made this word possible.”
