The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (UT MD Anderson ) has been ranked the leading hospital in the United States for cancer care in the 2026–2027 U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals” survey.
The institution has held the No. 1 position for 12 consecutive years and has remained among the top two cancer hospitals in the country since the rankings were first published in 1990.
“This ranking is a tremendous honor, and it reflects our unwavering commitment to continue making progress in our mission to end cancer,” said Peter W. T. Pisters, MD, President of UT MD Anderson.
“We are deeply grateful to everyone who made this recognition possible: our faculty and staff, volunteers, donors, and the patients and families we are honored to serve.”
Recognition Across Major Medical Specialties
In addition to its No. 1 position in cancer care, UT MD Anderson received national recognition in two adult specialties among hospitals across the United States.
The institution ranked No. 6 in Urology and No. 16 in Gastroenterology and Gastrointestinal Surgery.
Six adult procedures and conditions also received High Performing ratings, the highest rating available in these categories:
- Colon cancer surgery
- Ear, nose and throat surgery
- Gynecological cancer surgery
- Leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma treatment
- Lung cancer surgery
- Prostate cancer surgery
Nearly 200,000 Patients Treated in One Year
More than 197,000 patients received care at UT MD Anderson during the past fiscal year.
Of these, more than 10,600 patients enrolled in over 1,500 clinical trials. According to the institution, these studies form the world’s largest cancer clinical trials program.
UT MD Anderson also reported that more than 70% of all cancer drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration during the last fiscal year had been tested at the center.
The figures reflect the institution’s extensive involvement in clinical research and the development of new cancer treatments alongside its patient care programs.
Continued Recognition for Quality of Care
UT MD Anderson maintained a five-star rating in Vizient’s 2025 rankings and achieved its highest overall position to date, ranking No. 6.
The Vizient ranking recognizes the institution’s performance in delivering high-quality care across the full continuum of healthcare services.
The center also received its sixth consecutive Magnet designation in nursing. In 2025, it achieved its first Magnet Recognition with Distinction from the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Magnet Recognition Program.
A $2.5 Billion Campaign to Advance Cancer Care
In November 2025, UT MD Anderson launched “Only Possible Here, The Campaign to End Cancer,” a $2.5 billion philanthropic campaign.
The initiative is the largest fundraising effort in the institution’s history. It has already raised $2.14 billion to support strategic priorities connected to cancer care, research, education and prevention.
“These incredible accomplishments and national recognitions highlight the tireless work of so many team members, collaborators and supporters, who make this level of outstanding care possible,” Dr. Pisters said.
“We remain steadfast in that work, as we strive to move closer to a future without cancer for every patient and family member affected by this disease.”
Nearly 85 Years of Cancer Care and Research
UT MD Anderson has worked in cancer care, research, prevention and education for nearly 85 years.
Its mission remains focused on eliminating cancer in Texas, across the United States and worldwide through programs integrating patient care, research, prevention and professional education.
The 2026–2027 ranking places UT MD Anderson ahead of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, which was ranked No. 2 in the nation for cancer care.
