Yannick Buccella, Gastrointestinal and Molecular Oncologist at City Hospital Zurich, shared on X:
“In 1960, a child with leukemia had about a 10% chance of surviving 5 years. Today it’s around 90%.
Nothing about the disease changed. The treatment options did.
And it wasn’t one breakthrough, but 50 years of trials each adding a few percent. Nobody found ‘THE cure’, but a lot of new treatment options that were better than previous one.
This means there are people in their sixties today, with grandchildren, who were supposed to die as children. Cancer is still the hardest problem in medicine. But we as a field move. Until there are the same success rates also in brain, pancreatic or lung cancer.”
