Celebrating Professor Gevorg Tamamyan: A Visionary Leader in Global Oncology

Professor Gevorg Tamamyan’s story began with a simple but powerful belief: every child with cancer deserves the same chance to live, no matter where they are born. Growing up and working in Armenia  a lower-middle–income country where childhood cancer outcomes once lagged far behind global standards he saw firsthand the challenges families faced. From the very start of his career, he chose to fight for them.

Over the past two decades, he has played a central role in reshaping pediatric oncology in Armenia. He built multidisciplinary programs, trained new generations of specialists, strengthened institutional structures, and supported families navigating limited resources. His efforts helped transform the country into a recognized regional model for childhood cancer care, demonstrating how sustained leadership can impact both national systems and patient outcomes.

From Local Initiatives to Global Influence

Prof. Gevorg Tamamyan is a pediatric oncologist who serves as the Chairman and Professor of the Department of Hematology and Pediatric Oncology at Yerevan State Medical University (YSMU). His leadership has been central to developing Armenia into a regional model for childhood cancer care.

Beyond his academic work, Prof. Tamamyan leads several major regional and global initiatives. He is the President of SIOP Asia and the President of the Pediatric Oncology East and Mediterranean (POEM) Group, which brings together 28 countries and 110 cancer centers. He also serves as Co-Chair of the St. Jude Global EURO Regional Advisory Committee, supporting collaboration across 13 European countries. In addition, he is the CEO and Founder of the Immune Oncology Research Institute (IMMONC) and the Co-Founder and Chairman of the Institute of Cancer and Crisis.

Prof. Tamamyan is recognized as a Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (FASCO), an honor given to leaders who have made significant contributions to patient care, education, research, and global oncology. This recognition reflects his long-standing commitment to improving cancer outcomes and building partnerships across the world.

His work also extends into oncology communication. As Editor-in-Chief and Co-Founder of OncoDaily, he oversees one of the most active global platforms for cancer news and education, connecting clinicians, researchers, advocates, and patients through timely, evidence-based reporting. His leadership spans additional outlets, including Hemostasis Today, Fertility News, Cancer World Magazine, and the wider IMMONC network. Together, these platforms create a unified ecosystem that supports continuous learning and highlights scientific progress every day.

Under his guidance, this ecosystem has become one of the most reliable and consistent engines of oncology communication—reflecting his belief that cancer care, and the information supporting it, must remain active every single day.

Building Global Platforms for Awareness, Collaboration, and Education

Prof. Gevorg Tamamyan has also played a leading role in creating and supporting major international initiatives that bring together experts, advocates, and the public around cancer awareness and education. Among these efforts is the Global Cancer Movement, a large-scale OncoDaily initiative that recently gathered over 70 speakers for its Challenging the Status Quo in Colorectal Cancer congress. He is also behind VIRO – Voices in Renal Oncology, a program featuring 50 global specialists discussing advances and gaps in kidney cancer care and several more.

Another notable initiative is the Global Oncothon, the 2nd edition developed in collaboration with SIOP and focused on fundraising for pediatric cancer research. While independent, the Oncothon draws inspiration from the spirit of global awareness efforts supported by public figures such as Princess Diana, Lionel Messi, Richard Gere, and Alejandra Gere, emphasizing unity and collective responsibility in improving cancer outcomes.

Prof. Tamamyan’s commitment to global oncology is also reflected in his mentorship of early-career professionals. Being the 1st to implement official pediatric oncology fellowship in the country, now he has trained and supported lots of young oncologists—locally and internationally—helping them become clinicians, researchers, and leaders in their own countries. This commitment is also represented through the Yvonne Award,  created by OncoDaily to recognize outstanding young innovators in oncology. Over time, it has become one of the most anticipated ceremonies during the ASCO Annual Meeting days, celebrating early-career leaders who contribute to global oncology, mentorship, pediatric cancer care, and scientific progress.

Across all these projects, Prof. Tamamyan’s goal remains consistent: to connect people, expand access to knowledge, and build platforms that support continuous learning across borders.
