Gerry Hanna Celebrates a 33% Rise in 5-Year Cancer Survival

Gerry Hanna, Marie Curie Chair of Clinical Oncology at Trinity College Dublin, Member of the Board of Directors at the Irish Cancer Society, shared on LinkedIn:

The National Cancer Registry Ireland have publihsed their 2026 report.

Some good news in that there has been a 33% increase in 5-year cancer survival as compared to 20 years ago.

Some confronting statistics:

  • 1 in 2 will develop cancer invasive cancer in our lifetime
  • 10,258 deaths per year from cancer (29% of all deaths)
  • 20% of cancer deaths are caused by lung cancer

Much progress has been made, but so much more is needed.

Full report available.”
