Eva Katharina Masel, Head of the Clinical Department for Palliative Medicine, Professor and Senior Physician at the Medical University of Vienna, shared on LinkedIn:
“Absolutely delighted – and genuinely honoured – to have had the opportunity to chair Professor Eduardo Bruera at the Vi-CaN Symposium of the Vienna Cachexia Network.
This was truly a bucket-list moment for me.
I still remember attending my very first EAPC Palliative Care Congress in Trondheim in 2012. Professor Bruera gave a friendly wink to a colleague and me, and for two young palliative care physicians, it felt a little like a small gesture from a true legend of our field. More than a decade later, having the opportunity to chair him on stage was a very special and deeply meaningful moment.
Eduardo Bruera was born in Rosario, Argentina, the same city as Lionel Messi. And if Messi is the G.O.A.T. of football, then, to me, Eduardo Bruera is the Messi of palliative care. His extraordinary contributions to palliative medicine, oncology, symptom management, research, education and mentorship have shaped the field and influenced generations of clinicians around the world. It was a true privilege to welcome him to the Vienna Cachexia Network!
A huge thank you to our outstanding speakers, Vickie Baracos, Stephan Herzig and Sheng Tony Hui, for sharing their expertise, perspectives and enthusiasm, and to everyone involved in organising such a fantastic and truly international symposium.”
