Maria Babak, Head of Drug Discovery Lab at City University of Hong Kong, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“This Women’s History Month, let’s remember Dr. Gertrude B. Elion and her huge contribution to advancing cancer research and treatment.
She was a pioneering figure in the field of drug development and played a key role in the creation of numerous drugs that have significantly impacted medicine. Elion’s work has contributed to treatments for leukemia, herpes, and HIV, among other diseases.
Her innovative approach to drug discovery, which focused on understanding the biochemical processes of diseases, helped to shift the paradigm of drug development from observational to more rational, targeted methods.
Dr. Elion won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1988 for her rational approach to drug therapy.”
